The hypnotist does not possess any unusual or mysterious powers of the mind. Except that he understands certain aspects of the human mind. He has learned to master the art of suggestion which he uses to guide the individual toward developing greater awareness and control of the hypnotic state.
Intelligence is not an important factor in determining and individual’s ability to respond favourably to hypnosis. There is evidence that persons with higher intelligence and greater creative abilities tend to be somewhat more responsive to suggestion.
There is not one documented case of hypnosis doing harm to a person. Some evidence indicates that the hypnotic state is one in which the entire body tends to become self-regulating and functions with maximum efficiency. Some psychological disorders seem to correct themselves in hypnosis, even though no suggestions to that effect are given.
Hypnosis is not sleep and there is definitely no loss of consciousness at any time. The hypnotized individual is always aware of what is occurring; in fact, his awareness actually increases.
The hypnotic state can always be terminated easily and quickly by the hypnotist or the individual.
During hypnosis the individual is always conscious and aware of everything that is occurring. In the same manner that an individual guards his secrets while awake, he also protects his secrets while hypnotized.
In hypnosis, an individual would never accept any command nor obey any order that he considers to be against his own best interests or contrary to his morals.
Eighty-to-ninety percent of the work in hypnosis is accomplished in the light-to medium stages of hypnosis.
In many cases, hypnosis can affect change in just one or two sessions. In general, a great number of sessions are usually required before complete results are obtained.
Understanding “The Hypnotic State of Mind.”
The hypnotic state of mind is between analytical, conscious thinking (Beta) and deep unconscious sleep (Delta)… a natural state in which we drift in and out of throughout each day.
